On an early weekend in late May 1925, Cora Smith and her husband Art are living with their four children on the family farm in Brier Hill, New York and helping to build the summer cottage in Chippewa Bay that will be the center of their lives for decades. But it is the height of prohibition and Art likes to drink a little.
When a newcomer to the area offers him a chance to make extra money “running rum” across the St. Lawrence river from Canada, Art can’t think of a reason to turn it down.
