This guidebook provides an introduction to the nature of senior debate: what it is, why it matters, and how to participate. The special format used in senior debate is described as are the activities and support services of the Association for Senior Debate.
Older adults comprise the fastest growing sector in American society and throughout the world. Their experience and voices are needed now more than ever. Debating is an exhilarating activity that is especially rewarding for older participants. It has been suggested that a senior debate program can be seen as a cognitive health club, a place for exercising one’s mind and communication skills as well as for working out fresh perspectives on a wide variety of controversial issues.
Some senior debaters discovered the pleasure of competitive debate years ago in high school or college programs. Most, however, are newcomers to the activity. All are welcome. Whether you are interested in becoming a senior debater or in establishing a senior debate program in your community, this guidebook will get you started.
