Romantic movies, westerns and comedy lighten the dark cloud of the Depression hanging over junior and senior high school students, determined to pursue improvement of the economy, especially their own. Then on December 7, 1941, the United States is attacked, and the country is at war. Boys' options for the future suddenly are limited to those that will put their lives at risk and take them far from home, while girls' dreams abruptly are put on hold.

Robin and her younger sister pretend to have fallen down a rabbit hole into Alice's Wonderland, to bring both humor and hope to their new reality. While family, neighbors and friends change to confront the era's challenges, young people come of age and prepare to leave home, always accompanied by the sound of music.
