Lemon Meringue Pie at Midnight presents a potpourri of poems that showcase the human condition. Written by Maureen Hand, these poems express life’s sadness and joy—its mysteries and wonders. Some poems are personal while others portray subjects ranging from making tomato sauce to writing about Emily Dickinson, and from unrequited love to an old rocking chair. They portray a panorama of emotions felt from birth to death.
Jane Riley’s photos enhance Hand’s poems. Their haunting quality and range of emotions mirror the poignant themes of the poems. From a sacred altar to a picturesque waterfall, and from a row of cows to a child at prayer, Riley’s enhanced photos bring everyday subjects to life. Together, just like these old friends, their poems and photos celebrate what it means to be alive and what it means to embrace the glories of nature. Readers will not be disappointed when they leaf through these pages.
